·         League of Women Voters Forum for School Board

        6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Chamber of Commerce, Flagler Room

The League of Women Voters put on a great forum Monday night. Although attendance was not as strong as prior forums, the attendees were very engaged in the debate. Patrick Kelly was the emcee. Everyone was on their game this night, but it was clear once again that the News-Journal got this race correct. The issues of merit pay, the role of unions, the role of the school board and concurrency demonstrated that there is a clear difference in the candidates. Only eight day left...don't forget to vote on August 26th!

·         Grand Opening of Palm Coast Landing

10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Town Center

What a great day for the City of Palm Coast, Town Center and the County! The lovely new shopping center was THE place to be today. I was proud to be a part of the festivities, and it was so nice to meet familiar faces and make new friends. The property management team at Weingarten Realty put on a great show! Here are a few pictures from the day...

Nancy and Luci Dance take a break. It was a HOT day!

The "Stilt Man" was a big hit with the children and adults!

·         Flagler County Chamber of Commerce, FHBA & FCAR Forum for School Board

6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Palm Coast Community Center

Many thanks to Jason Delorenzo (FHBA),  Rebecca Delorenzo (Chamber) and Jimmy Millhollin (FCAR President) for hosting this interactive forum. Additionally, let us not forget the honorable emcee for the evening, Mr. Patrick Kelly! The campaing is picking up steam as we head to the finish line, and the differences between the candidates are becoming clearer. Remember, this is the first election for the District 1 seat since the former board member, Dr. Jim Guines, resigned last year.  Let your voice be heard loud and clear...the people of Flagler County will determine their representative for school board!

.

·        Hammock Community Conservation Corp. (HCCC) Forum for School Board

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Hammock Community Center, Malacompra Road

As the days wind down toward August 26th, the campaing is picking up steam!  This was my third visit to the Hammock, and I think they are starting to get use to me! I would like to extend a sincere thanks to Thad Crowe and the HCCC for hosting this event.

Amanda Mazzie, Flagler County's Queen of Queens was sparkling as usual! Many thanks to Star and Beachy for organizing the event, and Jason for keeping Flagler Chat going! Now, here are some pictures...

Following the election, it was time for a little R&R with the family! A day trip to Disney is not exactly restful or relaxing, but it was a LOT of fun! Kayla, Sarah and Drew had a great day!

·        Politics in the Park - Chamber of Commerce

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Daytona State College Campus

I think this is the start of something big for the Chamber and affiliates. The crowd was decent, at one point the atttendance was estimated at 75-100 people or so during the speeches.

One thing was certain...it was HOT!

.

Once again, the Deep Roots...New Vision message it making its mark with the residents. It was very nice to see so many old friends and new faces! I ran out of buttons, which is great! And I am getting low on yard signs! My children even got into the act! My oldest daughter, Kayla, helped by handing out brochures to the attendees in the amphitheater.

.

Congratulations to Rebecca and Jason Delorenzo and the Chamber staff for a great production!

Chamber of Commerce Board room

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

·        School Board Meeting

8:30 AM – 10:00 AM

This was a contentious meeting, as the school district's policy for employee daycare services was being revised. In the end, the board voted to consolidate all daycare to Bunnell. The main problem with this decision was the way it was handled. The board had to make a decision at this meeting, as school is starting just around the corner. There was no time left to research alternates. Why didn't the board pursue an alternate plan earlier? Because it is hard to set policy when board members are absent from workshops.

.

Click here to visit the School Board website to review the agenda and material presented at this meeting.

.

·        Palm Coast Yacht Club - School Board Candidate Forum

        One Yacht Club Drive

6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Many thanks to the Palm Coast Yacht Club for holding this forum for the candidates. I would also like to thank my fellow Education Foundation Board member, Dell Trayer, for moderating the event. The candidates had three minutes to introduce themselves, and then answered questions from the Yacht Club members.

.

I was very pleased with the turnout and the chance to once again get the "Deep Roots...New Vision" message in front of the voters. The differences between the candidates are becoming clearer as we progress toward the Primary on August 26th.

.

·        Peter Palmer Town Hall Meeting

6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Flagler County Library, Palm Coast

Congratulations to Mr. Palmer for holding a Town Hall meeting. Since Mr. Palmer is not seeking re-election this year, this is an honest and sincere attempt to reach out to the public and discuss issues.

.

Thurs, July 10th, 2008

·        Chamber New Member Orientation – 8:00 AM

Their was a good crowd of over forty people representing new Chamber members. President Doug Baxter and his staff are doing a great job of growing the Chamber in spite of the economic conditions. If you are not a Chamber member, give me a call and I will arrange a meeting with Doug so that you can learn about all the Chamber benefits.

·        Imagine Charter School Open House; 5:30 – 6:30 PM

I attended the Open House tonight. I met the principal, Dr. Spellman, and some of the new teachers. The school buildings will not be complete in time for the first day of school. However, the school is making arrangements with First Baptist Church on Palm Coast Parkway to start the school year at their facility. The Charter school will have use of the facility through October 31st, if approved by the church membership. The building should be complete by the end of October, according to Mr. Spellman. Best of luck to the Charter school.

·        Sarah Dance 8th BIRTHDAY!  Happy Birthday to our "cutie"!

Sarah Dance as Susan B. Anthony

 Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

·        School Board Meeting

6:00 PM – 8:30 PM - Tabled until 7-15-08, since a quorum was not available.

·        Mayor John Netts Town Hall Meeting

7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Palm Coast Community Center

A lively crowd of 50-60 people attended. The discussion centered on a new gas station being built on Palm Harbour Parkway in the "F" section. Obviously, some changes need to be made to alert council members and residents when commercial projects are being permitted that back up to single family residential homes.

.

In this age of technology, all such commercial property should be flagged in the Development Review system. When a site development application for a commercial lot is made to the City, regardless of size, that district Council member should get an email alerting them to the new development. The Council member then has the option to present the situation to the adjacent homeowners, alerting them to the upcoming development process and how they can be a part of this process.

My family enjoyed our time at the beach all weekend. Here are more pictures from the parade:

Pre-parade line-up! What a nice tow vehicle!                            Dylan, Sarah, Drew and Kayla are ready to go!

Look, it is Uncle Sam on the Andy Dance float!                           Andy and Sarah ride and greet the crowd.

 ·        Palm Coast Civic Association - Forum for School Board, Clerk of Court and Supervisor of Elections

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Palm Coast Community Center

What a wonderful event that was presented by the Palm Coast Civic Association. Turnout was lower than I had hoped for, but it was worth it even if only one voter turned out. I introduced the “Deep Roots…New Vision” campaign, and was pleased that it was so well received.

.

·        Coffee with the School Board

10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Superintendant’s Conference Room

I attended this meeting and was treated to a spirited discussion with representatives from United Cerebral Palsy, James F. Holland Foundation, Easter Seals and others. This is a great opportunity for the Board to reach out to community organizations and create partnerships that benefit our children.

·        School Board Workshop on Budget Issues

12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

I attended this workshop. The Board reviewed school staffing plans and individual school budget. Some schools will need to make spending cuts to bring their schools within budget, FPC for example. The individual school principal should be responsible for their school, and a preparing a budget that meets targets is crucial.

·        School Board Joint Workshop with the City of Palm Coast

9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

I attended this workshop and was pleased to see an ongoing dialogue with the City regarding project coordination. There are many avenues available for joint cooperation between the City and the School Board. Through my work experience, I have developed a great working relationship with the City Manager, City staff and City Council.

·        School Board Workshop on Budget Issues

12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

I attended this workshop in order to review the budget process and listen to discussions about how the District will provide services in lieu of State funding reductions. We all know about the cuts that are affecting our kids…such as the elimination of after school programs and stipends for teachers of these programs and mandates to meet staffing plans at the schools, but not much about an even and equitable review of administration staffing. More to come.

·        Ralph Carter Park Ceremony

        8:00 AM – 9:00 AM

I attended this ceremony, in honor of the late councilman, Ralph Carter. What a wonderful tribute to a great City

leader. I will always remember Mr. Carter during site plan reviews. He was opposed to gated communities, and he

tried very hard to insist that new communities within the existing platting communities be non-gated. He took a stand

and stood on his principles, and I admired him for that.

·        Alan Peterson Town Hall Meeting

7:00PM at the Palm Coast Community Center

Clubhouse Drive

I was a little disappointed in the turnout, as only 12 residents came out to meet Mr. Petersen.  Regardless of the

number, it is very important for each public official to get out into the public and make themselves available. As your

school board member, you can bet that you will see me out and about at our schools, sporting events and club

activities. I will hodl regular Town Hall meetings, and even come to your organization to speak and discuss school

issues.

·        Coffee with the School Board

10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Superintendant’s Conference Room

Government Services Building at 1769 East Moody Blvd., Bunnell

I attended the "coffee" today and had a great meeting with the "Board" and representatives from the FLAGLER

COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS and the FLAGLER COUNTY HOMEBUILDERS ASSOCIATION. Many thanks

to Jimmy Millhollin, FCAR President; Dorothy Desvousges, FCAR Executive Officer; Jason Delorenzo, FCHBA

Government Affairs Director, and Herb Whitaker, Broker and Flagler County Commisioner Candidate for attending.

There was a very beneficial discussion about the proposed Amendment 5, the proposed Palm Coast special events

signage ordinance, and various discussions about impact fees and school district funding. FCAR and FCHBA are

great supporters of the school system, and we need to keep these avenues of discussion open.

Monday; May 26, 2008

City of Palm Coast Memorial Day Services:

On Monday, May 26th at 7:30 a.m., flags will be raised at Heroes Park, located on Palm Coast Parkway, just west of the Flagler County library, to recognize our distinguished military veterans, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and EMTs who put themselves in harm's way and lost their lives to serve our nation.

Flagler Beach Memorial Day Services: The Disabled American Veterans Chapter 86, will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony on the Flagler Beach Pier, on Monday May 26 at 8:30 AM and at Veterans Park in Flagler Beach at 9 AM.

Flagler County Memorial Day Services:

The Director of the new National Veterans Administration Cemetery in Jacksonville, Arlene Vincenty, will be the keynote speaker at Flagler County’s Memorial Day Ceremony, Monday.

The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Monday in front of the Government Services Building at 1769 East Moody Blvd., Bunnell.   As part of the ceremony, Flagler County School Superintendent Bill Delbrugge will play taps.  Flagler County’s ceremony includes the “Last Roll Call” where the names of active county veterans who have died in the past year are read and a bell is tolled.

I attended all three Memorial Day services today and was overwhelmed by the emotion present at each service. Each was unique and special in their own way. The one feeling I was left with was that this was just not enough, and more needs to be done in our community to express our gratitude to the men and women who serve in our armed forces, and on this day, honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
